Chiang Mai Tigers Rugby Club was formed in 2005, in the latest attempt to create a Chiang Mai Rugby Club capable of playing visiting touring teams as well as in competitions in and around Thailand and in other countries in South East Asia. While Rugby has and is being played in Chiang Mai at School, College and University level there was no competitive Rugby for non students or foreign players. The Tigers club was created to fill this gap and thus provide opportunities for those individuals who have learned Rugby at Thai schools and abroad to continue playing Rugby, after they have left school or University.
Unlike previous clubs in Chiang Mai such as the Rhino’s in the 1980s, the Tigers are attempting to have a combined club of Thai and foreign players which can provide competitive teams for Rugby 7, 10 or 15 a side. Whilst the Tigers players will be playing in Chiang Mai competitions with University and College teams, the Club’s main focus will be on touring teams and external competitions.
For the past 3 years we have been organizing and running the Chiang Mai International Tens tournament which we hope will grow into a 16 team tournament with 8 international sides and 8 Thai sides from 2012. The inaugural tournament was won by ‘GU Doverie’ , a team from Moscow. The 2011 tournament was beset by withdrawals due to the Bangkok floods but proudly won by the Chiang Mai Tigers. The tournament has full support of Thailand Rugby Union.
